Originally a template was used to describe a standardized layout for a website in a box package. Today a template refers to an overall, customizable design.
Templates can be modified and configured to give each website utilizing a template, a unique "look and feel". As such, templates today have come a long way from their predecessors. Where a template was originally a rigid design that left little ability to customize, today’s templates contain built-in collapsible module positions, style classes, colour schemes and image packs that ensure no two websites using the same templates will look the same.
Another advantage of templating is, that because the design elements are separate from the site logic and content, changing the look of a site, is as easy as changing the template. Logos, graphics and articles remain the same, however the design of the site can be updated quickly and easily, without a very large cost. In addition to the relative small cost to update a sites look, updates can happen quickly, without any site downtime, as they literally only require a simple flip of a switch.
Make sure that any website you invest time and money in, uses a well supported template system to manage the design of the website. Joomla is one such CMS that uses a template system for its design. Here are links to a number of companies that produce professional templates for Joomla.
